Understanding the layout

Staggered positions matter when planning a bead motif. Peyote mode offsets alternating columns, while brick stitch mode offsets alternating rows. Loom positions align without that stagger, and square stitch uses rectangular chart marks. These are diagram conventions for visual planning. Real beads differ in size and shape, so a chart does not guarantee the exact proportions of a finished piece.

Using the sheet

Choose the technique before drawing a motif. Mark the starting edge and the direction in which rows or columns are read. Use a small repeat to test whether the stagger creates the intended outline; copying a square motif unchanged into a staggered chart can shift its apparent shape. Add a color key and counts on the working copy rather than relying on the bead outlines alone.

Choosing the settings

Type selects the bead arrangement. Spacing / size controls the chart bead width; the associated height follows the generator’s planning proportion. Larger marks leave room for symbols, while smaller marks fit more of a design on one sheet. Boundary positions are omitted when a complete bead mark would fall outside the printable area.

A practical example

Choose Peyote and keep the default spacing. Download the SVG and compare two neighboring columns: their bead centers should be vertically staggered. Switch to Brick stitch to compare a pattern with alternating row offsets, then return to the technique you intend to use.

Before you print

The chart does not calculate thread paths, bead quantities or a tested construction sequence. It is not a scale template for a particular bead brand or size. Check an actual sample before treating a charted shape as a finished measurement.
