Calligraphy Guide Paper
Generate calligraphy guide paper with an adjustable lowercase body height and slant angle. The sheet provides construction lines for practice while leaving the letter forms and pen movements to the method you are learning.
Understanding the layout
X height is the height of the main lowercase body before ascenders and descenders. This layout reserves additional space above and below that body, using a two to one to two proportion for ascender area, body and descender area. The slant guides are measured from the horizontal baseline. They establish a direction to follow, not the shape or stroke sequence of a finished alphabet.
Using the sheet
Choose the guide dimensions to match the nib and exercise rather than simply copying the smallest example in a book. Practice a repeated basic stroke before attempting a full word. Keep the paper orientation comfortable for your hand; rotating the physical sheet can help you follow the slant. Test a small sample with the actual pen because ink spread and paper texture affect the result in ways the preview cannot show.
Choosing the settings
X height (mm) determines the body region and therefore the overall band height. Slant angle sets the direction of the diagonal guides relative to the baseline. A larger x height leaves fewer bands on the page. The generator clips the diagonal guides to their writing bands so they do not run through unrelated areas of the sheet.
A practical example
Choose an x height of 5 mm and a slant angle of 55 degrees. Download the SVG. The body region should be 5 mm high, with 10 mm reserved above and 10 mm below. Use the diagonal lines to keep a set of practice strokes parallel.

Common question
Is the slant measured from a vertical line?
No. The selected angle is measured from the horizontal baseline. This convention is stated beside the control to avoid ambiguity.
