Understanding the layout

Graph paper provides two perpendicular families of evenly spaced lines. A square can represent a number, a distance, a stitch or a design unit; its meaning comes from the scale you write beside your work. When plotting points, label both axes and keep the same numerical increment between neighboring lines on each axis. A larger square is helpful when a learner needs room to write, while smaller divisions leave more plotting positions on a single sheet.

Using the sheet

For a classroom graph, draw the axes slightly inside the printed area so there is room for labels. For a room plan, choose a scale such as one square for 10 cm and record it on the page. For a pattern, shade complete cells rather than drawing between them. Use major lines to count groups quickly, but keep them light enough that your pencil marks remain the most visible part of the finished work.

Choosing the settings

Spacing measures the distance between neighboring grid lines. Major divisions change the emphasis, not the underlying spacing. Margins keep the grid away from the printer edge and provide room for binding. Choose the paper actually loaded in your printer; switching from Letter to A4 changes the sheet dimensions rather than stretching the squares.

A practical example

Choose A4, set Spacing (mm) to 5 and leave the other controls at their starting values. Download the SVG or PDF. Ten adjacent squares should span 50 mm in the file. Print at 100% and measure that distance on paper before using the sheet as a scale drawing.

Before you print

This is blank plotting paper, not a graphing calculator. A printer can change physical size when Fit or Shrink is enabled. PNG resolution changes pixel density, not the requested square size.
