Understanding the layout

A tablature line represents a string, while a number written on that line usually identifies a fret. The lines do not represent the pitch steps of an ordinary five line staff. The familiar six string layout is only one option; extended range instruments may require seven or eight lines. Keep the tuning and string order visible in your own notes because the blank grid does not establish either automatically.

Using the sheet

Before writing a phrase, note the tuning, capo position and any special string order convention. Leave enough horizontal space for bends, slides and repeated notes. If rhythm is important, add the appropriate rhythmic notation or use the combined staff layout. Print one sample and write a short phrase to check that the selected line spacing is comfortable for your pencil and notation style.

Choosing the settings

Strings / courses controls the actual number of tab lines. Systems per page controls repeated groups. Staff / string spacing changes the distance between neighboring lines. Blank measures supplies equal guide divisions without choosing a meter. A combined staff layout uses more vertical room, so reduce the number of systems when necessary.

A practical example

Choose A4, six strings and five systems. Keep the tab only layout and no bar lines. Download the SVG and count six horizontal lines in each of five groups. Write a short phrase using fret numbers, adding the tuning at the top of the sheet.

Before you print

This is blank notation paper. It does not transcribe audio, calculate fingerings or play the entered music. Equal measure widths are only draft guides. The line spacing is not a physical instrument construction measurement.
