Understanding the layout

A number line represents numerical order and equal differences along one straight direction. The key requirement is consistency: equal steps must occupy equal distances. Negative numbers belong to the left of zero when the line increases to the right. Fractions and decimals can describe the same position, so label style should follow the lesson rather than change the geometry. Use a short range first when learners are practicing a new kind of number.

Using the sheet

For addition, start at the first number and count equal steps in the required direction. For comparing fractions, choose an interval and subdivisions that include the denominators you need. For an assessment, hide the labels and ask the learner to restore selected values. Leave enough space between ticks to write an answer; a technically valid line with too many labels can be less useful than two clearer activities.

Choosing the settings

Start and end define the numerical range. Step determines the main tick interval, while subdivisions insert smaller marks between main ticks. Label style changes the representation of numbers. Paper orientation is helpful for a wide range: a landscape sheet provides more horizontal space, but it does not change the values you entered.

A practical example

Choose Minimum -2, Maximum 2, Label step 0.5 and Fractions as the Label format. Leave Minor divisions at None. Download the SVG. There should be nine labeled ticks from -2 to 2, including -1/2 and 1/2. Choose Blank labels for a student version with the same tick positions.

Before you print

This is a blank lesson aid rather than an automatic worksheet solver. Very dense ranges are rejected or need a smaller span to remain readable. Use matching divisions when comparing two separately generated lines.
