Bass Tab Paper

Understanding the layout

Each tab line is a string position, not a line of standard pitch notation. Fret numbers and any technique markings are added by the writer. A four string bass and a six string guitar therefore need different tab groups even when their pages have the same dimensions. The blank paper does not infer the tuning or the order in which you want the strings displayed.

Using the sheet

Write the tuning at the beginning of the sheet, especially for alternate tunings or an extended range bass. Leave space for rests, ties and technique marks instead of packing all fret numbers closely together. A short groove can be drafted on one system and repeated or varied on the next. Use the combined notation layout when the tab must be read alongside explicit rhythmic or pitch information.

Choosing the settings

Strings / courses changes the number of lines per tab group. Systems per page controls how many groups are requested. Larger line spacing gives more room for fret numbers but can make a dense page impossible. Optional blank measures divide the width for planning and do not imply that the phrase is in four or eight beats.

A practical example

Choose four strings, five systems and A4 paper. Leave Blank measures at No bar lines. The exported SVG should contain five groups of four horizontal tab lines. Add a tuning label and a short bass phrase, then check that the fret numbers do not touch adjacent lines.

Before you print

The paper does not check range, timing or playability. It is not a bass transcription service. Printed line distances are for readable notation rather than for laying out a real fretboard.
