Understanding the layout

The square cells provide a consistent place for handwritten characters. A reading lane is separate from a character cell: it adds space beside a vertical column or above a horizontal row without increasing the character count. Twenty rows by twenty columns therefore supplies 400 character cells, regardless of whether reading lanes are present. Formatting conventions for punctuation and small kana depend on the assignment and are not enforced by the paper generator.

Using the sheet

Decide the writing direction before beginning. For a vertical manuscript exercise, follow the column order required by your teacher; the page does not rearrange your handwriting. Leave room for the title and author where the assignment expects them. Reading lanes can hold furigana or brief annotations, but should not be counted as extra squares when estimating the length of the text.

Choosing the settings

Character cell size sets each square’s physical dimension. Cell columns and Cell rows determine the capacity. Reading lane adds extra width or height, so a 400 cell sheet may need smaller cells or larger paper when lanes are enabled. An impossible layout reports an error rather than clipping away some of the requested cells.

A practical example

Choose A4, 7 mm character cells, 20 columns, 20 rows and a 2 mm reading lane. Keep Vertical manuscript. The output should contain 400 character cells with narrow lanes beside the columns. Download the SVG and count one row and one column to confirm the capacity.

Before you print

The generator does not enter Japanese text, count a supplied essay or enforce manuscript punctuation rules. It creates the blank physical layout. Cell and lane dimensions must fit the selected paper.
