Understanding the layout

Banjo tablature records string and fret positions. A five string instrument includes a short drone string, but the blank page cannot decide how a particular arrangement should notate its special features. Tuning, capo use and fifth string treatment should be stated by the writer. The number of tab lines follows the requested string count, while the distance between lines is chosen for readability on paper.

Using the sheet

Write a tuning note before entering a roll or melody. Give repeated rhythmic groups enough horizontal space that a reader can distinguish them easily. Add picking hand information only when it helps the exercise, and keep the symbols consistent throughout. For a four string banjo, choose four lines rather than relying on an unexplained unused fifth line.

Choosing the settings

Strings / courses starts at five and can be changed. Systems per page determines how many tab groups appear. Staff / string spacing controls room for numbers and markings, while Blank measures provides optional planning divisions. The staff and tab combination is available for notation that needs a conventional staff as well.

A practical example

Select five strings, five systems and A4. Leave the page in tab only mode with no bar lines. Download the SVG and confirm that each group contains five parallel lines. Enter one roll, leaving space for the picking pattern or tuning annotation that explains how it should be read.

Before you print

The generator does not transcribe a performance or enforce a particular banjo tab convention. It does not locate a fifth string nut or calculate real fret positions. Those instrument details require separate information.
