Mandolin Tab Paper

Understanding the layout

A mandolin is commonly notated by its four courses, even though each course can contain two strings. One tab line therefore represents a course, not necessarily a single physical string. This differs from drawing eight independent lines merely because the instrument has eight strings. Label the course tuning and any alternate setup in the music so the page can be understood without the instrument beside it.

Using the sheet

Write the tuning before entering a phrase. Allow room above the tab for chord symbols and below it for rhythmic or picking notes when needed. A four course diagram can also help plan a scale fingering, but use Fretboard Diagram for a long fret layout instead of filling tab systems with an entire position map. For notation practice, select the combined staff and tab arrangement.

Choosing the settings

Strings / courses starts at four. Systems per page controls the repeated groups, and Staff / string spacing determines the writing gap within each group. Blank measures divides the horizontal space into a chosen number of guide areas without assigning a time signature. Combined notation uses more vertical space than tab alone.

A practical example

Choose A4, four courses and five systems. Download the PDF and verify five groups of four lines. Label the courses in your chosen display order, then place fret numbers for a short melody. Keep enough room between notes for the rhythm or picking information you intend to add.

Before you print

The blank paper does not choose fingerings, infer the tuning or play a melody. Four course notation does not describe the spacing of the instrument’s physical paired strings.
