Understanding the layout

A regular hexagon has six equal sides. This generator uses flat topped hexagons: the horizontal distance between opposite vertices is twice the side length, and the vertical distance between opposite sides is the side length multiplied by the square root of three. Those dimensions are not interchangeable. A game system that specifies a hex width may be referring to either measurement, so check its convention before entering a size.

Using the sheet

For a map, assign a distance to one hex and add a scale note beside the drawing. Count movement from cell to cell using the rules of your activity rather than measuring diagonal lines with a square grid convention. For geometry, mark the center of a complete hexagon and join it to the vertices to see six equilateral triangles. Use an interior cell for measurements because boundary cells are clipped at the printable margin.

Choosing the settings

Hexagon side (mm) is the length of one edge, not the across flats width. Smaller values fit more cells on a sheet; larger values leave room for labels or counters. Change paper orientation when the map needs a wider working area. The generator preserves the side length instead of stretching the tiling to fill a different sheet.

A practical example

Choose A4 and a 5 mm hexagon side. Download the SVG and inspect a complete interior cell. Its across corners width is 10 mm and its across flats height is approximately 8.66 mm. Use those values to check the interpretation of your chosen scale.

Before you print

Map symbols, coordinates and game movement rules are not added automatically. Partial cells at the margin are intentional. The paper does not provide chemical bond calculations or molecular structure validation.
