Printable Ruler
Generate a printable ruler in centimetres or inches at the length you need. The file preserves its intended geometry, but a physical print must be checked before it is used to measure anything important.
Understanding the layout
A ruler is useful only when its scale survives printing. The selected length is a physical dimension, not a request to fill whatever paper happens to be available. One inch is 25.4 mm, so a twelve inch ruler is 304.8 mm long before adding margins. It cannot fit along the 297 mm edge of A4 paper at full size. Choosing larger paper is an honest solution; silently shrinking the ruler is not.
Using the sheet
Download the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Disable options that fit, shrink or expand the page. Compare a long marked interval with a trusted ruler rather than checking only one tiny division. Cut along a straight edge if a portable paper strip is useful, and label it if it could later be confused with an unverified copy.
Choosing the settings
Units selects inches or centimetres. Length uses the selected unit, so read that control again after switching systems. Paper size and orientation must leave room for the ruler and its labels. The tool reports a fit problem when the requested physical length cannot be accommodated. The dedicated presets use suitable starting paper rather than pretending every length fits Letter.
A practical example
Use the default eight inch ruler and download the PDF. Its marked length represents 203.2 mm. Print at 100% and compare a four inch interval with a known ruler. Stop using the print as a measuring scale if the comparison is wrong, and check the print settings before trying again.
Before you print
A paper ruler is a convenient reference, not a calibrated precision instrument. Paper can bend, stretch or be cut inaccurately. Do not rely on it for safety critical, medical or high precision measurements.

Why is my printed ruler shorter than expected?
Check whether the print dialog fitted or shrank the page. Also confirm that the selected paper matches the loaded paper and measure the result against a trusted reference.
