Understanding the layout

An aspect ratio describes width relative to height. A 16:9 frame keeps that proportion whether its width is 160 mm or 80 mm. The physical height follows from the selected width: multiply width by the ratio’s second number and divide by its first. A ratio does not specify resolution, print quality or a platform’s upload requirements.

Using the sheet

Choose the ratio of the final image and sketch the main subject inside the frame. Compare how much empty space remains around text or important details. Generate a second ratio to see how the composition would need to change rather than stretching the first sketch. Keep any text away from the edge if the image may later be cropped or displayed inside a different interface.

Choosing the settings

Frame ratio offers square and several common rectangular proportions. Frame width (mm) sets the physical width; height is calculated rather than entered independently. The selected frame must fit inside the chosen page. The tool reports a fit problem instead of altering the ratio or shrinking the requested width.

A practical example

Choose 16:9 and a frame width of 160 mm. Download the SVG. The resulting frame should be 160 mm wide and 90 mm high. Use it for a composition sketch, then compare it with a square frame generated separately.

Before you print

The generator creates outlines, not image crops or video files. It does not check safe areas for a particular platform. Browser preview size is a fitted display, not a promise of physical screen dimensions.
