Understanding the layout

The frame represents the full outside dimensions of the selected photo size. A 4 by 6 inch frame is 101.6 by 152.4 mm. That describes a rectangle, not a crop or a required image resolution. A 35 by 45 mm frame is another physical size; it does not by itself establish the current requirements of a passport, visa or identity document.

Using the sheet

Print a sample at full size and compare it with the opening in a frame or album. Use the outline to plan a crop on a separate copy of the photograph, keeping important details away from a trimming edge. For mounting, allow for any border or mat opening deliberately rather than assuming the template includes one. Check both width and height after printing.

Choosing the settings

Type selects the exact size. Paper and orientation must provide room for the frame and its label. A frame that cannot fit is rejected rather than scaled down. Changing the paper orientation changes available space; it does not automatically rotate or resize the photograph you intend to use.

A practical example

Choose 4 x 6 inches on A4 portrait paper. Download the PDF. The outline should be 101.6 mm wide and 152.4 mm high, with the label outside the frame. Print at 100% and check those dimensions against a trusted ruler.

Common question

Is a correctly sized frame enough for a passport photo?

No. It verifies only a rectangle’s physical dimensions. Official photo requirements include other criteria and can change.
